Introduction
The United Nations (UN), established in 1945, plays a crucial role in maintaining international peace and security. However, calls for reform—particularly of the UN Security Council (UNSC)—have remained unresolved. One of the major obstacles is the persistent East–West geopolitical divide, especially the strategic contest between the USA-led Western bloc and the Russia–China alignment.
Body
Nature of East–West Policy Confrontations
Veto Power Politics: The five permanent members (P5) of the UNSC—USA, UK, France, Russia, and China—possess veto powers, often using them to protect strategic interests, which hinders consensus on reform.
Geopolitical Rivalries: Conflicts such as the Russia–Ukraine War (2022) have intensified tensions between Western countries and the Russia–China bloc.
Competing Global Governance Models: Western nations emphasize a rules-based international order, while Russia and China stress sovereignty and non-interference.
Resistance to Expansion: Proposals for expanding permanent membership—supported by the G4 countries (India, Germany, Japan, Brazil)—face resistance due to geopolitical competition and regional rivalries.
Critical Evaluation
The current UNSC structure reflects the post-World War II power distribution, not present global realities.
While reform is necessary to enhance legitimacy and representation, geopolitical rivalries prevent meaningful progress.
The continued deadlock weakens the UN’s effectiveness in addressing global challenges such as conflicts, climate change, and humanitarian crises.
Conclusion
UN reforms remain stalled due to entrenched geopolitical interests and the East–West divide. Achieving meaningful reform requires greater cooperation among major powers and recognition of emerging global actors to ensure that the UN remains relevant in a multipolar world.
