UPSC Prelims
The Preliminary Examination is the first stage of the UPSC Civil Services selection process.
It consists of two papers: Paper I (General Studies), which is merit-based, and Paper II (CSAT), which is qualifying.
Candidates who clear Prelims move on to the Mains, and those who clear Mains are called for the Interview (Personality Test), which determines the final ranking.
How to Calculate UPSC Prelims Marks
To calculate your UPSC Prelims score, account for both correct attempts and penalties for wrong answers. UPSC applies a 1/3rd negative marking scheme for incorrect responses.
Basic Formula:
Net Score= (Correct Answers×Marks per Question) − (Incorrect Answers×Negative Marks)
Example (Paper I – GS):
Attempted: 80 questions
Correct: 60
Incorrect: 20
Marks from Correct=60×2=120
Negative Marks=20×0.66=13.2
Final Net Score=120−13.2=106.8
Example – Paper II (CSAT):
Total Questions Attempted: 70
Correct Answers: 50
Incorrect Answers: 20
Marks from Correct=50×2.5=125
Negative Marks=20×0.83=16.6
Final Net Score=125−16.6=108.4
This simple calculation lets you instantly estimate your net score and accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q1. Is there negative marking for unattempted questions?
No. Only incorrect answers attract negative marks.
Q2. What if I mark two options for a single question?
UPSC treats multiple responses as wrong. You will lose 1/3rd of the question’s marks.
Q3. Does CSAT score count toward the final cutoff?
No. CSAT is qualifying. Your rank for Mains depends solely on GS Paper I, provided you clear CSAT.
Q4. How does UPSC handle ‘dropped’ questions?
When UPSC discards a question, it recalculates marks based on the remaining questions. Example: If they drop 1 GS question, each correct answer becomes 200 ÷ 99 = 2.02 marks.
Q5. Does the Prelims calculator predict Mains selection?
No. It only estimates your Prelims score. Selection for Mains depends on clearing the cutoff in Paper I (GS) and qualifying CSAT Paper II.
