Why in the news?
Recently, Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted two consecutive successful flight-tests of the Pralay missile from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam island off the coast of Odisha.
Pralay Missile is India’s first indigenous short-range, quasi-ballistic surface-to-surface missile, designed for battlefield use. Its recent test flights have put it in the spotlight. DRDO successfully conducted back-to-back tests of Pralay on July 28–29, 2025 from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island (Odisha). These tests validated the Pralay missile’s range, and both launches precisely hit their targets. With a range of 150–500 km and advanced guidance, Pralay can carry 500–1000 kg of conventional warheads to strike high-value targets with pinpoint accuracy. This bolsters India’s tactical deterrence and represents a key step toward self-reliance in missile technology.

DRDO conducted two successful flight-tests (28–29 July 2025) of the Pralay missile Dr. Abdul Kalam Island.
The trials were User Evaluation Trials validating the missile’s maximum and minimum range capabilities.
Each missile followed the intended trajectory and hit the target with pinpoint accuracy, meeting all test objectives.
Data from ITR tracking sensors (land and ship-based) confirmed that all subsystems performed as expected.
These successful tests pave the way for full-scale production and induction of Pralay into India’s armed forces.
In summary, Pralay’s back-to-back tests have drawn attention due to its game-changing capabilities. Its short-range, quasi-ballistic profile and precision strike make it a potent non-nuclear option for India’s military. The successful trials demonstrated that this indigenously developed missile is ready for integration into operations. Development of Pralay Missile
Indigenous Tactical Missile: Pralay is an indigenously developed, short-range surface-to-surface quasi-ballistic missile for tactical battlefield use. It adds a precise, conventional strike option to India’s missile arsenal.
Collaboration: It was developed by DRDO’s Research Centre Imarat (Hyderabad) in collaboration with other DRDO labs and industry partners (BDL, BEL, etc.). This multi-agency effort underscores India’s growing self-reliance in advanced missile tech.
Warhead Flexibility: Pralay can carry multiple warhead types against varied targets. Its conventional payload (350–1,000 kg) allows high-explosive fragmentation or penetrative warheads, giving it a flexible deterrence capability.
Strategic Posture: The missile strengthens India’s strategic posture by filling a gap in tactical strike capabilities. It complements longer-range systems (like the Agni series of ICBMs) and extends deterrence to the 150–500 km range band.
Self-Reliance: Developing Pralay advances India’s defence R&D and ensures mastery of short-range ballistic missile technologies. As a canisterised, solid-propellant missile, Pralay offers quick launch readiness and reduced dependency on foreign systems.
Flight Trials: Recent user trials from Kalam Island off Odisha demonstrated Pralay’s precision strike capability. These trials confirm that Pralay can be used flexibly on the battlefield with high accuracy, even under challenging conditions.
Features and Characteristics of Pralay Missile
Type: Pralay is an indigenously developed solid propellant quasi-ballistic missile, designed for short-range surface-to-surface missions.
Pralay Missile Range: It can strike targets 150–500 km away, offering deep battlefield penetration.
Payload: Capable of carrying 500–1,000 kg of conventional warheads including fragmentation, submunitions, or runway-denial types.
Guidance & Accuracy: Features advanced inertial navigation and guidance systems, with Circular Error Probable (CEP) <10 meters, allowing pinpoint strikes on radar sites, bunkers, or command posts.
Speed & Maneuverability: Achieves terminal speeds of Mach 5–6 and incorporates MaRV (Manoeuvrable Re-entry Vehicle) tech to change trajectory mid-air, evading interception.
Launch Platform: Deployed via road-mobile canister launchers (Ashok Leyland 12×12), enabling rapid relocation and shoot-and-scoot capability.
Development: Designed by Research Centre Imarat (DRDO) with key inputs from labs in Pune and industry partners like BDL and BEL.
Testing Site: Successfully test-fired from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island (formerly Wheeler Island), Odisha.
What Is a Ballistic Missile?
A ballistic missile is a rocket-propelled weapon that ascends under thrust, then follows an unpowered, gravity-driven arc toward its target.
Quasi-ballistic missiles, like the indigenously developed Pralay missile (range: 150–500 km), add in-flight maneuvers at lower altitudes, making them harder to intercept.
