The commission has confirmed the exam dates for the Indian Forest Service (IFoS) Exam 2025. The Prelims took place on 25th May 2025, and will be followed by the UPSC IFoS Mains Exam 2025. The IFoS Mains is scheduled to begin on 16th November 2025, with the detailed timetable to be released soon.

The IFS Exam has three stages: Preliminary, Main, and Interview.
Preliminary Exam: Two compulsory papers of 200 marks each (General Studies and Aptitude/CSAT). Both papers are objective (MCQs); Paper II (CSAT) is qualifying (33%). This stage is a screening test – marks do not count toward final ranking. Wrong answers incur 1/3 negative marking.
Main Exam (Written): Six descriptive papers.
Paper I is General English (300 marks)
Paper II is General Knowledge (300 marks).
Papers III–VI are optional subjects: two chosen subjects, with two papers each (200 marks each).
Each paper’s duration is 3 hours, and all answers must be in English. Only scripts of candidates who qualify on GK paper are evaluated further.
Interview/Personality Test: 300 marks. Candidates who clear the written Main exam are called for a personal interview.
Each stage is eliminatory. The final rank is based on the total marks from the Main written (1400) and interview (300). See the table below for a breakdown:
