Indian Forest Service Exam 2025 (IFoS) details for eligibility, syllabus, pattern, and preparation tips

All About Indian Forest Service

All About Indian Forest Service

The Indian Forest Service (IFS) is one of India's three All India Services (alongside IAS and IPS). Constituted in 1966, its officers are recruited by UPSC to manage the country's forests and wildlife. IFS officers work under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and implement the National Forest Policy. Unlike IAS/IPS, which focus on administration or policing, IFS specializes in forestry and environmental governance at the state and central levels. The IFS Exam is a UPSC-administered selection test for these roles. This blog covers everything aspirants need to know about IFS Exam 2025: eligibility, pattern, syllabus, important dates, and preparation strategy.

Indian Forest Service Exam 2025 Pattern

The IFS Exam has three stages: Preliminary, Main, and Interview.

  • Preliminary Exam: Two compulsory papers of 200 marks each (General Studies and Aptitude/CSAT). Both papers are objective (MCQs); Paper II (CSAT) is qualifying (33%). This stage is a screening test - marks do not count toward final ranking. Wrong answers incur 1/3 negative marking.

  • Main Exam (Written): Six descriptive papers.

    • Paper I is General English (300 marks)

    • Paper II is General Knowledge (300 marks).

    • Papers III-VI are optional subjects: two chosen subjects, with two papers each (200 marks each).

Each paper's duration is 3 hours, and all answers must be in English. Only scripts of candidates who qualify on GK paper are evaluated further.

  • Interview/Personality Test: 300 marks. Candidates who clear the written Main exam are called for a personal interview.

Each stage is eliminatory. The final rank is based on the total marks from the Main written (1400) and interview (300). See the table below for a breakdown:

Conclusion

Conclusion

In summary, the Indian Forest Service Exam 2025 requires rigorous preparation in both general studies and specialized forestry/environment topics. Aspirants should note the key dates (Prelims on 25 May, Mains in Nov) and ensure they meet eligibility (age and education). The exam pattern - two Prelims papers, six Mains papers (including 2 optionals) and an interview - is similar to the Civil Services Exam, but with a strong emphasis on ecological themes. Understanding forest conservation, wildlife management and environmental policies is crucial not only for the exam but for future public service. With about 150 vacancies, competition is stiff; a balanced strategy covering NCERTs, standard reference books, and regular practice will help aspirants excel. The IFS is a prestigious career for those passionate about India's forests and wildlife, contributing to sustainable governance of our natural heritage.
