Introduction

The Ganga River Basin is one of the most densely populated regions in the world. Stretching across northern India and parts of Nepal and Bangladesh, it supports a large population due to its fertile land, alluvial soils, and abundant water resources, which favour agriculture and human settlement.

Distribution and Density of Population

1. Role of Land Resources

The basin forms part of the Indo-Gangetic Plain, characterized by flat topography and extensive cultivable land.

  • Such terrain supports intensive agriculture and dense rural settlements.

  • Urban centers like Kolkata and Kanpur further increase population concentration.

2. Fertile Alluvial Soil

  • Deposition of rich alluvial soil by the Ganga and its tributaries makes the region highly productive.

  • Suitable for crops such as rice, wheat, sugarcane, and pulses, which sustain large populations.

  • Regular flooding replenishes soil fertility.

3. Abundant Water Resources

  • The Ganga and its tributaries provide perennial water supply for irrigation, drinking, and industry.

  • Extensive canal irrigation systems and groundwater availability support agriculture and settlements.

Conclusion

Thus, the fertile land, productive soils, and reliable water resources of the Ganga Basin have led to high population density and intensive agricultural activity, making it a crucial region for India’s food security and economic life, though it also faces challenges of resource pressure and environmental degradation.
