Introduction

Jyotirao Phule was a pioneering 19th-century social reformer who challenged the Brahmanical social order and caste-based oppression in colonial India. Through his writings, activism, and institutions, Phule addressed the issues of subaltern groups such as Shudras, Dalits, women, and peasants, advocating equality, education, and social justice.

1.Reforms for Lower Castes and Dalits

  • Phule strongly criticized the caste hierarchy and Brahmanical dominance that marginalized Shudras and Ati-Shudras.

  • In his book Gulamgiri, he exposed the exploitation of lower castes and compared it with slavery.

  • He founded the Satyashodhak Samaj in 1873 to promote social equality and rational thinking among oppressed communities.

2.Advocacy for Women’s Rights

  • Phule worked actively for female education, challenging patriarchal norms.

  • With the support of Savitribai Phule, he established one of the first schools for girls in Pune in 1848.

  • He opposed child marriage, widow oppression, and infanticide, and set up shelters for widows and abandoned children.

2.Focus on Peasants and Economic Justice

  • In Shetkaryacha Asud, Phule highlighted the exploitation of peasants by landlords, moneylenders, and colonial authorities.

  • He advocated fair taxation, social reforms, and improved conditions for farmers.

Conclusion

Thus, Phule’s writings and activism addressed multiple layers of social inequality—caste, gender, and class. His ideas laid the foundation for later anti-caste and social justice movements, influencing leaders like B. R. Ambedkar and contributing to the broader struggle for an egalitarian Indian society.
