Introduction
The Vedic period (c. 1500–600 BCE) is broadly divided into the Rig Vedic (early Vedic) and Later Vedic phases. This transition reflects significant transformations in both social structure and economic organization due to geographical expansion and changing modes of life.
Body
1. Changes in Society
From tribal to territorial society: Early Vedic society was tribal (jana-based), while later it became territorial with the emergence of janapadas.
Varna system evolution: Initially flexible and based on occupation; later became rigid and birth-based, with clear hierarchy among Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras.
Status of women declined: Women in Rig Vedic times enjoyed education and participation in assemblies; later, their role became restricted with decline in rights like education and remarriage.
Rise of social inequalities: Later Vedic society saw increased stratification and dominance of Brahmins and Kshatriyas.
2. Changes in Economy
From pastoral to agrarian economy: Rig Vedic economy was cattle-based; later agriculture became dominant with use of iron tools.
Land ownership: Earlier, land was communally owned; later, private ownership and land grants emerged.
Growth of surplus and taxation: Agricultural surplus led to taxation (bali, bhaga), strengthening the state.
Expansion of trade: Trade and crafts developed, with emergence of specialized occupations.
Conclusion
Thus, the transition from the Rig Vedic to Later Vedic period marks a shift from a simple, egalitarian, pastoral society to a complex, hierarchical, agrarian one, laying the foundation for early state formation in India.
