What the instructions on the paper actually say

What the instructions on the paper actually say

The instruction block printed on the question-cum-answer (QCA) booklet has held steady across recent years, and ignoring it costs marks. From the 2024 and 2025 papers:

Instruction on the booklet

What it means for you

"Write two essays, choosing one topic from each of the Sections A and B"

Two essays from two different sections. Both from Section A means one goes unmarked.

"in about 1000-1200 words each"

Roughly 1,000 to 1,200 words per essay. The paper states that the word limit should be adhered to.

"Total Marks: 250"

125 marks per essay, weighted equally

The essay must be in the medium authorised in your admission certificate

Stated on the cover of the QCA booklet

"No marks will be given for answers written in a medium other than the authorised one"

A wrong-medium essay scores zero, however well it is written

That last row is why this paper decides more selections than a single three-hour session suggests.

The arithmetic: 250 for Essay, 1,000 for the four General Studies papers, 500 for the two optional papers, so 250 divided by 1,750 is 14.3%.

Essay carries the same weight as one General Studies paper, and a single essay at 125 marks is 7.1% of your mains total on its own.

Scores also spread wider here than on GS, because there is no model answer that everyone converges on.

How to download the official UPSC Essay paper 2026 PDF

How to download the official UPSC Essay paper 2026 PDF

There are two sources and they arrive at different times.

The scanned booklet comes first. Candidates carry it out of the hall and scans circulate by evening. That is the copy linked on this page.

UPSC's own upload comes much later. The Commission posts mains papers to its site well after the exam window closes, and in the 2025 cycle they went up in September, once all sessions were done. To find the 2026 file when it appears:

  1. Open upsc.gov.in

  2. Go to Examination, then Previous Question Papers

  3. Select Civil Services (Main) Examination, 2026

  4. Open Paper I, Essay

  5. Download the PDF

If you want the topics today, use the scanned copy. If you are archiving for a future attempt, wait for the UPSC upload. It is the clean and complete version.

The gap that matters is 23 to 29 August. Six days sit between GS IV and the qualifying papers, and most of that window belongs to your optional rather than to revising papers already written.

GS I follows in under 24 hours. If you want a last pass on structure and phrasing before tomorrow morning, the General Studies Paper 1 answer-writing set and the keyword list for mains answer writing are the two shortest things to go through tonight.

UPSC Essay paper previous year topics, 2020 to 2025

UPSC Essay paper previous year topics, 2020 to 2025

Six years of topics, useful for reading the pattern before the 2026 set is out, and for anyone starting on 2027. Every set below is transcribed from the Essay papers on UPSC's previous question papers archive. For the full mains paper set year by year, see PadhAI's UPSC previous year questions collection.

Year

Section A

Section B

2025

Truth knows no colour · The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting · Thought finds a world and creates one also · Best lessons are learnt through bitter experiences

Muddy water is best cleared by leaving it alone · The years teach much which the days never know · It is best to see life as a journey, not as a destination · Contentment is natural wealth, luxury is artificial poverty

2024

Forests precede civilizations and deserts follow them · The empires of the future will be the empires of the mind · There is no path to happiness, happiness is the path · The doubter is a true man of science

Social media is triggering "Fear Of Missing Out" amongst the youth, precipitating depression and loneliness · Nearly all men can stand adversity, but to test the character, give him power · All ideas having large consequences are always simple · The cost of being wrong is less than the cost of doing nothing

2023

Thinking is like a game, it does not begin unless there is an opposite team · Visionary decision-making happens at the intersection of intuition and logic · Not all who wander are lost · Inspiration for creativity springs from the effort to look for the magical in the mundane

Girls are weighed down by restrictions, boys with demands, two equally harmful disciplines · Mathematics is the music of reason · A society that has more justice is a society that needs less charity · Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school

2022

Forests are the best case studies for economic excellence · Poets are the unacknowledged legislators of the world · History is a series of victories won by the scientific man over the romantic man · A ship in harbour is safe, but that is not what a ship is for

The time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining · You cannot step twice in the same river · A smile is the chosen vehicle for all ambiguities · Just because you have a choice, it does not mean that any of them has to be right

2021

The process of self-discovery has now been technologically outsourced · Your perception of me is a reflection of you, my reaction to you is an awareness of me · The philosophy of wantlessness is Utopian, while materialism is a chimera · The real is rational and the rational is real

Hand that rocks the cradle rules the world · What is research, but a blind date with knowledge! · History repeats itself, first as a tragedy, second as a farce · There are better practices to "best practices"

2020

Life is a long journey between human being and being humane · Mindful manifesto is the catalyst to a tranquil self · Ships do not sink because of water around them, ships sink because of water that gets into them · Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication

Culture is what we are, civilization is what we have · There can be no social justice without economic prosperity but economic prosperity without social justice is meaningless · Patriarchy is the least noticed yet the most significant structure of social inequality · Technology as the silent factor in international relations

What six years of topics tell you

Two patterns hold across every paper above.

Abstract quotations dominate. Six papers, eight topics each, is 48 topics between 2020 and 2025.

Count how many name a specific contemporary subject the way a General Studies question would, and you get one: the 2024 topic on social media and fear of missing out.

Everything else is an aphorism, a proverb or a philosophical proposition. If your preparation was a list of expected topics assembled from this year's headlines, the paper was probably not testing that list.

What it tests is whether you can attach your current-affairs material to an abstract proposition.

Section B is not the current-affairs section. A widely repeated claim says Section A is philosophical and Section B is society, governance and economy. The 2021, 2022 and 2025 papers do not support it.

"You cannot step twice in the same river" and "The years teach much which the days never know" both sat in Section B.

Treat both sections as open, and choose on the strength of the material you can bring, not on which section a topic came from.

For a topic-wise breakdown and content banks you can build essays from, see PadhAI's essay topics for UPSC Mains.

What to do now

What to do now

  1. Today, after 12 noon. Download the paper PDF above and write down the two topics you attempted, with your rough word counts and time split. You will not remember them accurately in November.

  2. Tonight. Stop the post-mortem. GS I is at 9:00 AM tomorrow, 22 August, and comparing topic choices with other candidates has never moved a mark.

  3. After 30 August. Reconstruct both essays and get them evaluated against the essay paper answer-writing practice set before the next cycle starts.
