UPSC NDA 2025 Tie-breaking policy
In the event that two or more candidates score the same marks, UPSC follows a structured approach to define ranks:
Same marks, different ages: If two candidates have equal aggregate marks, the candidate who is older in age is given a higher rank.
Same marks, same age: When both candidates have same total marks and same age, the written examination score of the individual candidates is compared. The candidate scoring higher in written examination is given a higher rank.
The table below explains this structure with 2 examples:
Scenario | Candidate A | Candidate B | Who Gets a Higher Rank? | Reason |
Same marks, different age | Marks: 1200 Age: 19 yrs | Marks: 1200 Age: 20 yrs | Candidate B | Older candidate is preferred |
Same marks, same age | Marks: 1200 Age: 20 yrs Written: 620 | Marks: 1200 Age: 20 yrs Written: 600 | Candidate A | Higher written score wins |
